The Lycian people lived in this region until around the 4th century BCE, when it became part of the Roman Empire. Their legacy is still intact in the form of the impressive tombs carved into the rock face of the mountain a short boat trip from Marmaris. Iztuzu Beach is also known as Turtle Beach as it’s one of the most important nesting locations for loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean. The beach itself is a great place to enjoy the sun and swimming, but the main nesting sites are marked and normally off limits during 8pm and 8am during nesting season (May to October). If you time it right you might even see turtles coming ashore, or baby turtles hatching into the sea.
