Description

Private Prison Island & Nakupenda Sandbank Full-Day Experience
Enjoy a fully private full-day adventure combining two of Zanzibar’s most iconic highlights — Prison Island and the breathtaking Nakupenda Sandbank. Designed for couples, families, and small groups, this experience offers privacy, flexibility, and true island vibes at your own pace.
Your day begins at 09:00 AM from Stone Town, where you board a private traditional wooden boat for a scenic 20–30 minute cruise across turquoise waters. The boat is local and simple in style, offering an authentic Zanzibar experience.
🐢 Prison Island (Changuu Island)
Your first stop is Prison Island, explored with your private guide.
Meet the famous giant Aldabra tortoises, learn about the island’s fascinating history, and visit the old prison and quarantine ruins. Enjoy relaxed time for walking, photos, and exploration — without rushing or crowds.
🏖 Nakupenda Sandbank
Next, sail to the stunning Nakupenda Sandbank, a natural white-sand paradise surrounded by crystal-clear waters. Depending on the tide, this sandbank appears like a dream island in the middle of the ocean.
Here you can:
Swim in turquoise waters
Snorkel using included equipment
Relax on soft white sand
Take photos and drone shots
Enjoy the space at your own pace (no private beach claim)
Your crew prepares a fresh seafood & Swahili buffet lunch directly on the sandbank, featuring grilled fish, octopus, rice, vegetables, chapati, and tropical fruits. Soft drinks, wine, or beer are served throughout the day.
Return to Stone Town between 15:30 and 16:00, depending on tide and sea conditions.
👉 This is a simple, authentic Zanzibar experience:
a basic wooden boat, no toilet on board, tide-dependent schedule, and genuine island atmosphere — yet fully private for up to 10 guests.
Perfect for travelers looking for exclusivity, nature, culture, and unforgettable ocean views.

FAQs

What type of yacht should I charter?
No matter what type of yacht you choose to charter, we know that you will have a fantastic time on the water. If you are more about the journey, and want a relaxing time aboard, then choose from one of the many sailboats on the platform. If you are more about the destination, and going fast, check out the powerboats on Sailo. For an exclusive experience, Sailo recommends chartering a luxurious yacht for the day. Finally, Sailo has access to many event boats as well for group outings from 50 - 1,000 guests. If you are still unsure, then just ask! Read more
What should I bring?
Bring yourself, and some comfortable clothes suitable to the season you are going to be out on the water. Please keep in mind that it is often 10 degrees cooler out on the water, so a jacket or windbreaker is never a bad idea. We also recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses, as well as a swimsuit if appropriate for your charter location. Please coordinate with your captain regarding any food or drinks that you wish to bring aboard. For term-charters, Sailo recommends using soft-sided luggage, and keeping it simple. Read more
How long does a rental last?
The basic daily rental is structured as either a quarter-, half-, or full-day. A quarter-day is two hours, a half-day is four hours, and a full-day is eight hours. You can also discuss a custom trip with the boat by contacting the owner through Sailo. Most term charters (weekly rentals) are from Saturday to Saturday. Keep in mind that the boat generally needs to be back at the dock by Friday evening, and you will need to be off the boat on Saturday morning so they can prepare the boat for the next guests.
