Description

Tom will be your host for a lovely sail out of New Rochelle, NY, located roughly one hour out of midtown Manhattan. He's been sailing Long Island Sound since 2018 and has been organizing day sailing outings on Long Island Sound and New York City harbor since 2022. Want some hands-on sailing experience? Took an ASA course (or preparing for one?) and need to practice? Other customers just want to come along for the ride in a beautiful and peaceful environment with fresh air and winds on your cheeks. Hot in the summer? You can come on board and go for a swim while we anchor with Manhattan in the background. Sunset sails are fantastic out here! We could sail you to a restaurant and wait on board while you and your guests go on land for the meal then we return to New Rochelle. Some customers seek a commemoration ceremony with ashes in honor of a loved one. If you want (and given the 8 hours required for that experience, for a realistically higher price), we could do tailor-made cruises such as down the Western Long Island Sound to LaGuardia and Hell Gate onto the East River ending by the Statue of Liberty. NYC is a great sailing location!

Crew

Tom is a US Coast Guard licensed skipper ('six pack' license) who has sailed on Long Island Sound since 2019. He began sailing in California in the 1960s then sailed near Boston in the 1970s and has sailed in international waters in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Tom and his wife bought our boat in 2019, which became the platform also for our son Max to sharpen his own sailing skills (which began when Max was in Middle School in Hong Kong and sailed near Stanley Harbor). We have been training a number of friends and customers who wish to sail with us to enjoy the air and sea and gain confidence at the helm.

We had a wonderful time. We are family of four and the boat had space for all of us. Tom and his crew have been great hosts, took us for a very nice tour, shared stories and laughers and showed us a very nice part of the long island sound. The trip started at 11 until about 4pm. Communication with Tom has always been excellent and clear. We will do this again! Thanks Tom and Max for help on making an unforgettable birthday present!

I am an American with an international background. PhD in Russian History (I lived in the USSR twice, for my academic work). Then switched to banking and started working on Wall Street in the 1980s. Became a Citigroup Managing Director, with nearly three decades in corporate & investment banking. Worked with Citi in Italy, France, Korea and Asia (regional job). Then worked in Saudi Arabia for 8 years in finance & investments, and now in NYC in investment banking & financial consulting. My sailing experience is captured in the Crew sections for my boat. Meanwhile my languages are (besides English) French, Italian, Spanish and Russian, with a bit of German, Korean and Arabic as well. My life motto is to show my love for nature and humanity through good deeds and words in my daily life. I love sailing because I love the air and beauty of the water and the exhilaration of moving in the water. I find a sailing outing to bring out the best in my guests. As a sailor, I've received a lot of praise from my customers and friends because they tell me I can explain things clearly and calmly, and they seem always to enjoy the outings on our boat. Try it and I think you will love it too!

Location & Destination Guide

New York City looks great from the ground, but that view from the water is something else! Jump aboard a Sailo boat rental from the Big Apple and experience the thrill of the sea - and snap plenty of incredible pictures. Sailing in NYC is a must on your summer bucket list, whether you are visiting or a New Yorker.

It might not be the first thing you think of when finding things to do in New York City, but renting a boat for a full day or just a few hours is a truly memorable experience.

FAQs

What type of yacht should I charter?
No matter what type of yacht you choose to charter, we know that you will have a fantastic time on the water. If you are more about the journey, and want a relaxing time aboard, then choose from one of the many sailboats on the platform. If you are more about the destination, and going fast, check out the powerboats on Sailo. For an exclusive experience, Sailo recommends chartering a luxurious yacht for the day. Finally, Sailo has access to many event boats as well for group outings from 50 - 1,000 guests. If you are still unsure, then just ask! Read more
What should I bring?
Bring yourself, and some comfortable clothes suitable to the season you are going to be out on the water. Please keep in mind that it is often 10 degrees cooler out on the water, so a jacket or windbreaker is never a bad idea. We also recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses, as well as a swimsuit if appropriate for your charter location. Please coordinate with your captain regarding any food or drinks that you wish to bring aboard. For term-charters, Sailo recommends using soft-sided luggage, and keeping it simple. Read more
How long does a rental last?
The basic daily rental is structured as either a quarter-, half-, or full-day. A quarter-day is two hours, a half-day is four hours, and a full-day is eight hours. You can also discuss a custom trip with the boat by contacting the owner through Sailo. Most term charters (weekly rentals) are from Saturday to Saturday. Keep in mind that the boat generally needs to be back at the dock by Friday evening, and you will need to be off the boat on Saturday morning so they can prepare the boat for the next guests.
