It was great, and please find the review from my wife:

Today is a special day for us.
And this is a very special gift from my husband for our 40th wedding anniversary — to see the southern coast of Madeira from a sailing yacht. For this occasion, we chose the yacht Spica.

Friendly Captain Gabriel and his assistant greeted us at the pier and introduced us to their vessel — a beautiful retro yacht that was clearly well-loved. :)

Comfortably settled on the deck near the captain, it was fascinating to listen to him talk about sailing and to see everything happen in real time. How wonderful it is to ask questions and receive answers, discovering something completely new.

There was a joyful thrill as we left the harbor, and pure delight as the yacht began gliding through open water. The sensation was incredible — the way the boat responds to each turn of the wheel.

All around was the stunning beauty of this unique place: on one side, the vastness of the sea with a barely visible horizon line — it truly brings the expression “the edge of the world” to life. 😉
On the other side — cliffs, first a large and beautiful city, and then clusters of small houses like swallows’ nests perched on the mountain slopes or at the very base of majestic rocks right at the water’s edge.

Lush greenery, colorful cliffs, waterfalls, a cable car, houses that seem to have climbed impossible heights, and the thin threads of roads — everything looks completely different from the open sea than it does from land.

Madeira from the sea, with its ever-changing views, is absolutely breathtaking.

After a swim in a cozy bay that the captain picked out for us — accompanied by flying fish! — we headed toward the sunset. Near the western tip of the island, the yacht touched a light swell, gently buffered by the island’s shelter. The captain turned the boat around, and we began our journey back, once again savoring the motion and watching the sun wrap itself in a blanket of clouds.

Then came a barbecue with delicious fish and a surprise — an amazing homemade cake from Captain Gabriel’s mother. A heartfelt bow of thanks to the captain and his mother! :)

And finally, we returned under the stars, quietly gliding into the sleeping harbor.

A warm farewell to the captain and his assistant.
Our sincere thanks for this beautiful introduction to Madeira from the sea on such a special day! Thank you. :)

Location & Destination Guide

FAQs

What type of yacht should I charter?
No matter what type of yacht you choose to charter, we know that you will have a fantastic time on the water. If you are more about the journey, and want a relaxing time aboard, then choose from one of the many sailboats on the platform. If you are more about the destination, and going fast, check out the powerboats on Sailo. For an exclusive experience, Sailo recommends chartering a luxurious yacht for the day. Finally, Sailo has access to many event boats as well for group outings from 50 - 1,000 guests. If you are still unsure, then just ask! Read more
What should I bring?
Bring yourself, and some comfortable clothes suitable to the season you are going to be out on the water. Please keep in mind that it is often 10 degrees cooler out on the water, so a jacket or windbreaker is never a bad idea. We also recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses, as well as a swimsuit if appropriate for your charter location. Please coordinate with your captain regarding any food or drinks that you wish to bring aboard. For term-charters, Sailo recommends using soft-sided luggage, and keeping it simple. Read more
How long does a rental last?
The basic daily rental is structured as either a quarter-, half-, or full-day. A quarter-day is two hours, a half-day is four hours, and a full-day is eight hours. You can also discuss a custom trip with the boat by contacting the owner through Sailo. Most term charters (weekly rentals) are from Saturday to Saturday. Keep in mind that the boat generally needs to be back at the dock by Friday evening, and you will need to be off the boat on Saturday morning so they can prepare the boat for the next guests.
