In 2026, South Miami area rentals offer premium value: Pontoons and Bowriders average $125–$250 per hour; Center Consoles (ideal for the southern bay) range from $150 to $400 per hour; and Luxury Motor Yachts typically range from $400 to $1,200+ per hour including a captain. A full-day private charter averages around $1,100, while larger luxury vessels for events can reach $5,000+.

The 'South Miami Circuit' includes: 1) Anchoring at the Nixon Sandbar for a social swim; 2) Cruising past the historic houses of Stiltsville; 3) Exploring the atoll pool and nature trails at Matheson Hammock Park; and 4) Heading south to the Deering Estate for a view of the historic 'Stone House' from the water.

The southern part of Biscayne Bay is beautiful but notoriously shallow, with many protected seagrass beds and shifting 'flats.' A USCG-licensed captain (usually included or a clear add-on) manages these navigation hazards and the local manatee speed zones, ensuring you don't run aground or damage the marine habitat while you enjoy the scenery.

Since South Miami is slightly inland, the primary boarding hub is Matheson Hammock Marina. Other popular nearby locations include Dinner Key Marina (Coconut Grove) and Deering Bay Yacht Club. Many hosts also offer 'private dock' pickups if you are staying at a waterfront property along the Coral Gables Waterway.

Yes! South Miami is actually one of the best starting points for this trip. A 45-to-60-minute cruise south takes you into the heart of Biscayne National Park, where you can visit the iconic lighthouse at Boca Chita Key or snorkel the shipwrecks along the Maritime Heritage Trail.

Most rentals are BYOB, which is common for day trips to the sandbar. However, South Miami is a 'Dock-and-Dine' sleeper hit. You can have your captain pull up to Red Fish by Chef Adrianne at Matheson Hammock for an upscale meal. In 2026, many luxury yachts also offer catering add-ons featuring local Cuban platters or fresh seafood if requested in advance.

If you book a captained rental, no—the captain’s license covers the vessel. For bareboat (self-drive) rentals, Florida law requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, to have a Boating Safety Education ID Card. Visitors can quickly obtain a 90-day temporary certificate online, which is valid for 2026 rentals.

For standard 2-to-4-hour local cruises (Nixon Sandbar or Stiltsville), fuel is frequently included in the total price for captained charters. For full-day motorboat charters or high-speed runs to Elliott Key, fuel is typically charged based on consumption at the end of the trip. Always check the 'Fuel Policy' in the listing details.

Standard private '6-pack' charters are limited to 6 guests, while larger '12-pack' luxury yachts allow up to 12 (sometimes 13). For larger celebrations like a corporate retreat or a wedding party, South Miami has access to Inspected Passenger Vessels available on Sailo that can carry up to 40 or 80+ guests.

For the best sandbar experience at Nixon, mid-day (11 AM – 3 PM) is peak time for clear water and social vibes. However, South Miami is famous for its Sunset Cruises. Watching the Miami skyline ignite across the bay as you cruise past Stiltsville is considered one of the most romantic and scenic experiences in Florida for 2026.
