Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: I never force my customers to sail in the rain but if you still do want to sail, I have a cabin and a bimini to take cover under so you’ll remain dry. If you decide not to sail (the chance of rain must be greater than 40%), we can try to reschedule and if we can’t find a date that works, I will give a full refund. I also don’t force people to sail when the temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. I will call the sail off if there is a strong threat of lightning or winds are in excess of 30 miles per hour.

We must wait until the day of the charter (at least two hours prior to the start of the charter) to make the final decision on weather so we can interpret radar projections. Sometimes the chance of rain might be greater than 40% but radar clearly shows rain passing miles north or miles south from the area we sail, allowing us to charter in dry conditions. The closer to the start of the charter that we can wait, the more accurate the forecast will be.

Q: What is the difference between a 2, 3, and 4 hour charter?
A: It’s entirely up to you with regards to how you spend your time aboard the Tayana 37 but below are typical routes:

For a two hour charter, most customers prefer to sail down the Hudson River to see the Statue of Liberty up close. In addition to seeing this glorious landmark up close, sailing to the Statue of Liberty also provides a mesmerizing landscape view of the Manhattan, Jersey City, and Brooklyn skylines, including the Brooklyn Bridge. Another option for a two hour charter is to sail around Battery Park (the southern tip of Manhattan) and up the East River so we can pass underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. In other words, for a two hour charter, you have to choose between sailing close to the Statue of Liberty or underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Both iconic landmarks are visible from one another.

For a three hour charter, we sail close to the Statue of Liberty AND underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. A three hour charter includes everything mentioned above so you do not have to choose between sailing close to the Statue of Liberty or underneath the Brooklyn Bridge as you will experience both.

For a four hour charter, there are many options. Most people prefer to sail to the Statue of Liberty, around Governors Island via the Buttermilk Channel, underneath the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, and then around Battery Park before reentering the Hudson River. Essentially, it’s the three hour charter plus the circumnavigation of Governors Island (and more time under sail). Another option is to sail to the Statue of Liberty and then explore the East River more by sailing underneath the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges. Repeat customers of mine also enjoy different routes such as sailing as far south towards the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge as the wind and currents allow (we usually get close to this bridge but not under it) or sailing up the Hudson River, slightly past the George Washington Bridge.

All of these different charter options have been well received by thousands of customers over the decade I have been sailing New York Harbor.

Q: What is the difference between a morning, afternoon, sunset, and city lights charter?
A: A morning charter usually provides calm conditions as there is typically less wind and less boat traffic.

An afternoon charter is usually the warmest and provides the most wind to sail.

A sunset charter typically starts when it is still light out and ends after the sunset, allowing us to view the skyline in different phases from day, to sunset, to night.

A city lights charter begins and ends after the sun has already set and typically provides calm conditions similar to the morning charter.

All of these different charter options have been well received by thousands of customers over the decade I have been sailing New York Harbor.

Q: Is there a bathroom aboard?
A: Yes.

Q: What does the charter come with?
A: Bottled waters, sodas, ice, cups, plates, cutlery, napkins, etc. You are more than welcomed to bring food aboard.

Q: Can I bring alcohol?
A: Yes, but I don’t provide alcohol. I have the appropriate bottle openers and nice plastic wine glasses and plastic champagne flutes on board.

Q: Will I get seasick?
A: My sailboat has a full keel which makes her more stable than most boats. However, all boats rock. I suggest that you take a motion sickness pill before boarding the boat if you are afraid of getting seasick as the pill takes time to work.

Q: Do you allow children aboard?
A: Of course! I’ve been sailing since in my mother’s womb so it would be hypocritical of me to not allow children aboard the Tayana 37! Children under 12 years of age are required to wear a life jacket, which I provide.

Q: Do you have a refrigerator?
A: Yes, but it’s not a full sized refrigerator like you would find in a home. It’s large enough to hold drinks for a charter.

Q: Do you have a stereo?
A: Yes and I have bluetooth speakers as well. I have an auxiliary cord that you can use to plug into the stereo to play music from your phone. You can also bring your charging cord to plug into the stereo’s USB port to keep your phone charged.

Q: Do you have Wi-Fi?
A: No but phones do get reception out on the water.

Captain Eric is the best!!! First, he has a wealth of knowledge. We were so lucky he shared his extremely beautiful and personal boat with us. It was an incredible experience. I grew up in NY and have lived here my whole life, but I never experienced NY and the Statue of Liberty from this perspective.
    Thank you Thank you, ERIC!!
Our group had a WONDERFUL time.

Eric was outstanding. We had some threatening weather, and he communicated it all clearly and we were able to go out and have a magic day sailing on New York Harbor.

Just a perfect experience. The Bridges, then the statue, and then a gorgeous sunset. Amazing.

    Thank you Eric!

10/10 couldn’t recommend Eric more!!!! My boyfriend loves to sail so for his birthday we did a 2 hour cruise and it was perfect. Eric was so knowledgeable but also didn’t force us to listen to anything if we didn’t want! He made sure we were taken care of the entire time and made us feel so comfortable! He had water, cups and a tray that didn’t slide for his wine! Blankets if we needed it and even took some amazing pictures we will forsure be framing one day! I came to work on Monday and told my all coworkers if you’re going to ever sail in the city please use Eric! You can tell he’s truly sharing a passion and it was a privilege to set sail with such a professional! We will be back!

I contacted Eric in advance of my girlfriend's birthday! We took a three hour evening cruise around southern Manhattan visiting both the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty. Eric was incredible. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history of New York and New Jersey, including the construction of the financial district, the Lincoln Tunnel, and Governor's Island. It was also so interesting to hear about Eric's sailing background and stories.

The boat was beautiful and well-maintained. Eric did a great job teaching us how to move around the boat safely, especially as I had never sailed before. Eric was also happy to be a photographer for us at any and all times during our sail. He was well-prepared with drinks, cupholders, and a speaker we could connect to. It's very easy to see that he loves his job and knows how to make sailing enjoyable for everyone! Overall, 10/10 experience! Can't wait to do it again!

The New York skyline is designed from an off the shoreline perspective…and we thought that a boat, especially a sail boat would be the best way to experience it.

Eric the owner of Narwhal Yacht Charters and the captain of the Sail Boat was an excellent host, guide and made us feel completely at home.

We chose the sunset cruise for 3 hours (6:30pm to 9:30pm) and it was magical !

The route charted by Eric was perfect..which also included going under the Brooklyn Bridge and sailing near the Statue of Liberty.

I would highly recommend this once in a lifetime treat !!

Obvious 5 stars for Eric and his boat the Genesis. Beautiful atmosphere on this incredibly well renovated boat. Eric know how to be here to make you feel safe and how to stay discrete when you want to spend some private time with your crew.

We're two families who do charters every summer. It's a great way to get away from city life without leaving the city.

This was our first sunset sail and we couldn't have asked for a better captain and better boat. Eric's classic sailboat is a labor of love for him. He restored it himself.

And he bent over backwards to make sure we were comfortable on our 4 hour charter.

    Would do it again!

The sail was perfect in every way. Boat was clean and well maintained. Eric was ready and departure was exactly on time. He did safety protocols first which I very much appreciated. He was very knowledgeable about the architecture and landscapes we were looking at. I would absolutely take this sail again and will.

Myself and 5 friends had an awesome 4 hour sunset summer cruise . The boat was clean and well maintained. Eric gave us lots of interesting facts about what we were passing and the best places to take pictures. Eric was super communicative leading up the trip with any questions we had about what he provided, where to meet him etc. There was a chance of rain that luckily cleared up the morning of and he was clear about what his rain requirements were and that we'd hear from him throughout the day. The 6 of us fit by in the back with Eric by the wheel (covered) and then there was room toward the front for us to stand and sit. We all had a great time!

Eric was a great host and captain to our sail ride. This was my second sail with Eric as I was showing my parents around New York city for their first vacation post-pandemic. As assured, Eric was safe, kind, communicative and very friendly on board. He shared some fun facts, history and insights during our sail. We got great family pics by the Statue of Liberty and NYC skyline! I'll be back to sail with Eric soon again!

Eric made this experience SO easy and SO unforgettable. He was super friendly and helpful, genuinely happy to answer questions ahead of time and during, and extremely patient with all of us (even after a few glasses of champagne). Hands down one of the best experiences i’ve had, birthday or otherwise, and i’m already planning the next outing my friends and i will be taking with Eric. The boat was well-stocked and had everything we needed. In terms of pricing, Eric is very reasonable and provides way more bang for your buck. He’s also incredibly responsive and tries to work with your scheduling constraints.

Whether you're a tourist or a born and bred NYer, this trip is a treat. Captain Eric is professional, knowledgable and welcoming. The boat is a beauty, and extremely comfortable. Bring a picnic, and see NY like you've never seen it. Even if you're not lucky enough to get a sunset, seeing the city light up at night from the water is spectacular.
Eric was very responsive to all my needs and concerns before, and during, the sail, including keeping us updated on potential weather issues, and making sure we knew where to go and what to expect. We plan to make this an annual adventure.

I booked a sunset sail with Captain Eric for a group of girlfriends, and we had the best time! Eric's boat is an immaculate, beautiful classic sailboat, and sailing along the Hudson at sunset was absolutely magical! Captain Eric was super attentive to everyone's needs, and made sure that the group was comfortable and made recommendations on how where to sit on the boat to make the most of it.
The girls loved it, and we will definitely book with Captain Eric again soon!

My siblings and I surprised our mom with a sunset cruise of Manhattan's skyline as an early Mother's Day celebration. As jaded New Yorkers who love to be on the water, our ride on Captain Eric's gorgeous sailboat managed to exceed our expectations. He could not have been any warmer or passionate about sailing. He had fun facts to share about New York City and the environment. We lucked out with perfect weather and a view of a blood orange full moon. Capt. Eric also provides snacks/drinks and makes you feel at home on his actual floating home. I can't wait to go out on a longer day cruise with friends :) Definitely recommend!
